Ok – this one is a little confusing the answer should be B, C and E. You need the Mailbox role because – well if you didn’t have it then you have no email. The antispam tools come with the Exchange 2013 mailbox role but are not enabled by default. However, they are replacing an edge server. The mailbox role does not send mail outside the organization or receive external mail without the CAS.

Technically the mailbox server with its Transport server and hub selector can send internal mail to another MBX within the organization but you will still require the CAS role at least to listen on Port 717 to send mail from the MBX to the interent or the Front end service on another server.

No I think it should be just B and E because you just need to replace the edge server (edge server do not have a mialboxes) so you just need a CAS server instead of edge server and you will need an AntispamAgents.ps1 to work with it

Ahmed you can not install antispam agents on the CAS. I chose C,E but I think Jim has a good point.

But why do we need CAS, Mailbox role is capable of sending emails directly to internet unless we have set frontendproxyenabled to TRUE on the send connector.
and i am sure it can receive external emails as well.

I think it should be C and E

I think it is B,C and E. 🙂
because to receive inbound emails we need CAS.

B: you need a Client Access Server 2013 (stateless server)
C: you need a mailbox server 2013 (including the Transport Services)
E: the Install-AntispamAgents.ps1 cannot be run on the CAS but only on mailbox server (which requires C as valid answer)
