I believe it is C. D would only work if they site in question were a sharepoint site, which is not specified. In any case, adding a CNAME record would be the best solution.

How can D be the right answer? By creating a new sub domain and setting up redirection of http://contoso.com to the sub domain, how does that get redirected to the Microsoft SharePoint Online public website?
You would still need to create a CNAME record to point http://contoso.com to http://contoso.sharepoint.com, (or whatever the sharepoint sites url is) and that would still have to be done on the authoritative DNS servers.
I would say C is the right answer.

Khozi – As someone else has said you cannot set a CNAME on a naked domain so C is wrong. You would have to setup a subdomain in order to add the CNAME.
Therefore this would make D the answer.
Add a subdomain then set it to be used with the SharePoint public site. Then add a redirect for http://contoso.com to go to the new subdomain (this redirect could be a CNAME as it can be set on the subdomain)
This article is close to providing the steps necessary to solving this problem. The main catch to this question is that email and im are already setup to use the root domain contoso.com meaning the CNAME record is already in place for contoso.com.
At this point we need a subdomain like http://www.contoso.com to be created for the site to be redirected to and a CNAME record for the new subdomain.
