DRAG DROP
Your network contains an Active Directory domain named contoso.com. The domain
contains two member servers named Server1 and Server2. All servers run Windows Server
2012 R2.
You generalize Server2.
You install the Windows Deployment Services (WDS) server role on Server1.
You need to capture an image of Server2 on Server1.
Which three actions should you perform?
To answer, move the three appropriate actions from the list of actions to the answer area
and arrange them in the correct order.
Box 1: Start Server2 by using PXE.
Box 2: Add a capture image to Server1.
Box 3: Add an install image to Server1.
Note:
* Capture images are Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) images that allow
you to easily capture the install images that you prepare using Sysprep.exe. Instead of using
complex command-line tools, once you have run Sysprep.exe on your reference computer,
you can boot to the Windows Deployment Services client computer using PXE and select
the capture image. When the capture image boots, it starts the Capture Image Wizard, which
will guide you through the capture process and optionally upload the new install image to a
Windows Deployment Services server.
Steps
/ create a capture image.
/ Create an install image.
/ Add the install image to the Windows Deployment Services server.
I think this is not the right answer.
I would say:
1) Add boot image to Server1 (servre1 runs WDS/PXE)
2) Start server2 by using PXE
3) Add a captured image to Server1
it’s add a CAPTURE image not captureD 🙂 but i think same for the correct answer
AIM: To boot Server2 using PXE and capture it’s current state.
Taking into account this is an untouched WDS server.
1. Boot image: this in the initial file (not exactly but near enough to explain) as indicated by DHCP to boot Server02 when booted from network PXE.
2. Capture image: the boot image will prompt (or auto select) which PE environment you wish to load. Which in this case will be a capture as that is what we want to do.
3. PXE boot Server2: Server will not boot into PXE or have a PE environment to load without 1 & 2 being undertaken.
Our question options stop here but if we were to continue would go…
4. Complete the wizard to capture the wim file of Server2, inc option to save wim to server
5. Import the WIM into WDS server.
6. Create a install image (used to install a wim to a client.
Sorry, rather: add boot image, add capture image (based on the boot image), boot Server2 using PXE. The next step would be to capture Install image of Server2. I’m still not 100% about that answer
Correct.
confirmed John is correct
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/11680.creating-a-capture-image-in-wds.aspx
the question states that >> you need to capture an image on Server2 to Server1
so the correct answer must contains the selection ( Add an install image to server1 )
then, we should consider that the WDS already contains a Boot Image and the order be:
1- Add a capture image to server1 ( to boot from it on the client which server2)
2- start server2 from PXE
3- Add an install image to server1
You Add a BOOT-image.
You Add a CAPTURE-image (create it) from this BOOT-image.
Then You BOOT the Sysprepped system via PXE.
sorry John is not correct
its
1)boot image
2)Capture Image
3)Boot PXE
I agree with Mina,
First you must have boot image -> Create capture image from the boot image -> Boot Server2 from PXE & capture it.

Agreed – Boot image, capture image, PXE
The question states that you have (just) installed WDS. So there are no boot images that exist from which to create a capture image. Thus, you need to create one. From that boot image you create a capture image, which you use to boot the target server using PXE.
This aforementioned link explains it quite well.

Sorry…I posted this under the wrong comment. Raj is wrong,,,see above
Wrong, and install image would be for installing Windows from a WIM stored on WDS server. Boot, Capture, PXE as stated above is correct.
minna and raj are correct…. jst confirmed that on technet
sorry i mean mina only….. raj is not….
Tnx all, most off the correction was write.
Having walked through an actual setup of WDS, these are the steps you take:
Add a capture image to Server1.
Boot PXE on Server2.
Add an install image to Server 1.
Explanation:
You are adding the capture image to Server1 in order for Server2 to boot off of the capture image. The capture image is basically a stripped down OS just allowing for the host machine running it to capture the generalized OS they spoke of in the question.
You then need to boot from PXE on Server2. In PXE boot, provided all your DHCP or static or routes are established to the Win Deployment Server (Server1 in this case), Server2 will use the capture image from WDS to run as its own OS.
At this point, you are booted up to the capture image’s GUI on Server2. You select to capture the OS on Server2. This then presents an option on where you want to save the captured OS to. Search for your WDS (Server1 in this case) and save it in the correct folder.
This saves your captured image (from Server2) onto the hard drive of Server1.

It’s boot image, capture image, boot from pxe
Stop the peanut gallery
Correct Answesr:
1. Add a Boot image on server1
2. Add a capture image on server1
3. Start server2 using PXE
Correct Answer:
1. Add a Boot image on server1
2. Add a capture image on server1
3. Start server2 using PXE
Mina and Gareth are correct
Hold on Mina is wrong.
sysadmin is wrong
gareth right and mina is still right.
no, that’s wrong.
ah, right
no wrong, right?
I think it should be like:
add a boot image to server1
add an install image to server1
Start Server2 by using PXE
see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0kx0xRn9J0
So i think Raj is correct.
install image is not needed at all. In fact, you are capturing the image from Server2, so you don’t need one. The correct sequence is 1) add boot image on S1, 2) add capture image on S1, 3) start S2 from PXE
You need to have boot image to be able to create capture image. So the answer must be
1. Boot Image
2. Capture Image
3. Boot PXE
By the process of logical thinking
The question does not ask to install a captured image or mention prestaging and the “server to go” suggestion is just nonsense, we are therefor left with three choices to drag and drop (Add boot, Boot/Start PXE & Add capture)
The logical order is this
1. We can not boot server2 by PXE to capture its image to WDS without a boot image present and the question does not suggest that WDS has been configured yet (only installed)so we need to add a boot image first
2. We can not add a capture image of server2 until we boot/start server2 by PXE so we need to do that second
3. We can now add the capture image of server2
in my opinion
1. Add boot image
2. Boot/start Server2 PXE
3. Add capture image
sorry but your opinion is wrong now.. on server1 first u add boot , than add capture (bc boot option is for deploying image on pc,and capture do opposite way ) finally we start pc2 and boot from network and see boot menu where u can choose capture…
In 20415B Book in LAB scenario says:
You first need to create a capture boot image, and then use PXE to boot reference computer and capture reference image.
So:
1. Add boot image
2. start PXE
3. Add capture image
You are wrong, to be able to capture the computer image, you need to boot from capture image. And you need to create capture image from boot image so IMHO the correct order is as mentioned before:
boot image
capture image
boot from PXE
I think you are right Jency,
You first add a boot image, then you create a capture image and add this to the available boot images. Then you do a PXE boot and select the capture image to boot from.
1. add boot image
2. add capture image
3. PXE boot
The correct answer is definitely:
1) Add a boot image to Server1.
2) Add a capture image to Server1.
3) Start Server2 by using PXE.
I’ve done lots of WDS before and know for sure this is the correct answer
All of you guys, dont confuse everyone else.this is the correct answer
In the options there is no option of create a capture image.Capture image is modified boot image. So in this scenario we suppose that boot image is already added,Now take it like this—
Boot using PXE
Addding the capture image (which in this scenario its already created adding and creating is a different thing)
and last add an install image
this is the correct answer. All the best to everyone
When answering this question people need to read the links and make sure they are answering the questions for windows server 2012r2. A lot of the “supporting links” for peoples answers are for windows 2008 and windows 7. We are working with Win2012r2, so do your research correctly and stop posting answers with links that doesn’t pertain to windows server2012 r2.
I have one problem with the answer and all the comments here:
from my experience you can never assume anything but the default when an exam question states something that was setup or installed unless they provided more information or the choice of crappy answers might give a hint.
My point is, when you setup WDS then a default setting is *not to respond to any client*!
But it’s not stated this was reconfigured, and the crappy choice of answers just offers “create a prestaged” device, which might be a hint that maybe the thing was reconfigured to *respond to known devices* which makes “adding a prestaged device” a possible part of the answer.
any thoughts on this? this one makes me a bad pain in the head… :-/
i created two installations from scratch.
server 1 – nothing installed
server 2 – nothing installed.
next server 2 was generalized using sysprep.
next server 1 : added WDS role
now we come to the answer part.
there was no boot image on server1 in WDS console.
so STEP1: created a Boot image from windows DVD.
then STEP2: create a capture image from Boot image of step1.
then STEP3: Boot Server2 using PXE
here the answer ends.
after booting server 2 we select the option of capture image and then importing the capture image into wds that will make an install image.
Tested and here are the correct steps:
1. Add image
2. create and add the capture image to WDS.
3. Configure Boot PXE in server2
This is a helpful link and describe these three steps.
