Yes I agree, azure online backup is not supported for bitlocker encrypted volumes.

Provided answer is correct. Bitlocker encrypted volumes can be backed up as long as they are unlocked before.

If you unlock a bitlocker encrypted drive, it is no longer a bitlocker encrypted drive. 🙂 IMHO, the answer should be Windows Server Backup for the first one.

That’s like saying if I unlock a door then the door no longer exists. It’s still a bitlocker encrypted drive after it’s unlocked, it’s just that you’ve unlocked it.

The question ask to use WAOB WHENEVER POSSIBLE… so I can use WAOB on Volume1, since I disable bitlocker…

Manuel

Manuel

That’s a tricky one. ChaserZX is right but where in the question you see the VOL1 is unlocked? As Blazz says, if you unlock it, it’s no longer encrypted. What a mess!!
I go with WSB-WABO-WSB-WSB because it’s the typical MS question where they want you to know that you can’t use WABO to backup a removable drive or a Bitlocker-encrypted volume.

Like what Dev7 said, if you unlock a door, it is STILL a door. Take a non Bitlocker encrypted drive and an unlocked Bitlocker encrypted drive for comparison. The difference here is that you don’t have to encrypt a Bitlocker encrypted drive again, you simply lock it.

Furthermore, in the question it says: The solution must use Windows Azure Online Backup whenever possible.

A11. The following set of drives/volumes can’t be backup:

Removable Media: The drive must report as a fixed to be used a backup item source.
Read-only Volumes: The volume must be writable for the volume shadow copy service (VSS) to function.
Offline Volumes: The volume must be online for VSS to function.

Bitlocker protected volumes: The volume must be unlocked before the backup can occur.
File System Identification: NTFS is the only file system supported for this version of the online backup service.

I think this gives us the option to unlock the encrypted drive. so we can back it up to azure.

my opinion goes to provided answer. it is true.
