I understand that replication should be minimized but to create 3 domains for that – I see it as overkill unless links are super slow (at least replication would be last traffic that will overload link).
three sites, one domain and all subnets assigned to correct site. that would be all. 🙂

The only way to minimize AD traffic is to use domain boundaries. After that it’s just the Global Catalog and Schema master the generate intersite traffic.
