During synchronization, you can choose whether hashes of user passwords are synchronized,
as well. If the password hashes are synchronized, the target directory can carry out
authentications without the involvement of the original directory.
Otherwise, the actual authentication operations are passed back to the original directory.
For instance, when you synchronize an on-premises AD DS with Azure AD, if password hashes are synchronized authentications are carried out by Azure AD. Otherwise, the authentication operations are passed back to the on-premises directory.
