About “crawl component” in Q005, Q024, Q039, Q044, Q096:
IF HAVE mirror OR hosts EXISTS THEN is yhis,
OTHERWISE, crawl component (see that in this case, “components” appear in plural).

Add or remove a host distribution rule

I believe this answer is wrong. Adding an entry to the Hosts file will do nothing for crawling. And the link takes you Adding a Host Distribution rule which also will not accomplish this. What you really need is a Crawl Rule (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee792871.aspx) which is a Crawl Component.
A dedicated web front end for crawling. You can accomplished this adding the IP and host name of the farm in the hosts file of the index server.
