At least 1 sys on LAN must run DHCP server software which is configured to pass out IP addresses from DHCP scope/range & a subnet mask. Configure host to use DHCP. DHCP client boots up and automatically sends DHCP discovery packet via broadcast. DHCP client sends DHCP request. DHCP server sends client DHCP Acknowledgement and lists MAC add and IP add info in itd database = DHCP lease- set for a fixed time (usually 5-8 days). Near end of lease, DHCP client makes another DHCP Discover message to DHCP server.
