Link Aggregation or trunking is a method of combining physical network links into a single logical link for increased bandwidth. With Link aggregation we are able to increase the capacity and availability of the communications channel between devices (both switches and end stations) using existing Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet technology. Two or more Gigabit Ethernet connections are combined in order to increase the bandwidth capability and to create resilient and redundant links. A set of multiple parallel physical links between two devices is grouped together to form a single logical link.

Link Aggregation also provides load balancing where the processing and communications activity is distributed across several links in a trunk so that no single link is overwhelmed.

A type of interconnection between two network devices that enables multiple links between those two network devices to be viewed as a single virtual link. The two primary advantages of link aggregation include:

* Redundancy, in the event of a link failure the other link(s), participating in the aggregated link, will continue communications, and
* Increased Bandwidth, the net bandwidth of the aggregated link is the sum of all the links participating in the link aggregation.

Both participating devices must support the same type of link aggregation. There are a number of proprietary types of link aggregation but most network product vendors now support the IEEE 802.3ad standard. The links existing within an aggregated link group are also commonly referred to as 802.1ad trunks.
The 802.3ad, also referred to as LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol), is now a part of the 802.3-2000 standard.
