Virtual Machine Filesystem (VMFS) was created by VMware to efficiently store and access VMs. VMFS is written on block-based directly attached or shared storage devices. VMFS is VMware’s cluster filesystem that allows multiple hosts to access the same filesystem at the same time. It enables vSphere hosts to write and read from the datastore simultaneously by using an advanced file-locking mechanism.
