vCenter appliance does NOT support external DB2 database.

https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-51/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vsphere.vcenterhost.doc%2FGUID-0B9988FF-5FB6-4656-9C58-EE3617B57E90.html

Now, if option D was vCenter Application with an external DB2 database, that would make sense.

With option C, you definitely need another database, but certainly not a different server. So that’s out. With option B, both the vCenter application can use the default MSSQL Express…in fact, KB: 2005084 indicates that VUM requires no extra configuration if you chose MSSQL Express during install. So that’s out… With option A…same thing as if with your SQL 2008 Enterprise. Oracle DB can support both databases…on the same Oracle server…so that’s out.

This is a horrific question.

It is pretty simple in fact. Pay attention to words Appliance or Application:
A is supported – not requires an additional database server
B is supported – not requires an additional database server
C is supported – not requires an additional database server
D is not supported – requires an additional database server
Answer is D.

Answer B: vCenter Application with the default database

vCenter Server Appliance 5.0.1, 5.1.x, and 5.5 use PostgreSQL for the embedded database, instead of IBM DB2 that was used in vCenter Server Appliance 5.0. If you use the embedded database with the vCenter Server Appliance, when you upgrade to version 5.5, the embedded IBM DB2 database is migrated to a PostgreSQL database. The configuration state of your existing database is preserved and the schema is upgraded to be compatible with vCenter Server Appliance 5.5.
vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 embedded vPostgres database can now support as many as 100 vSphere ESXi hosts and 3,000 virtual machines.

The Update Manager server requires SQL Server or Oracle database. Update Manager can handle small-scale
environments using the bundled SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. For environments with more than 5 hosts and
50 virtual machines, create either an Oracle or a SQL Server database for Update Manager. For large scale
environments, you should set up the Update Manager database on a different computer than the
Update Manager server and the vCenter Server database.

The correct answer is: D. vCenter Appliance with an external DB2 database

Answer A: vCenter Server Appliance 5.x and vCenter Update Manager 5.x both support Oracle as a database. An additional database server is therefore not required, so this answer is not correct.

Answer B: vCenter Server 5.x comes bundled with Microsoft SQL Server. vCenter Update Manager 5.x supports Microsoft SQL Server databases, so an additional database server is not required. This answer is also not correct.

Answer C: The same as answer B, except now the database is on a separate database server. The result however is the same; no additional database server is required as vCenter Server 5.x and vCenter Update Manager 5.x both support Microsoft SQL Server as an external database, so this answer is not correct.

Answer D: vCenter Server Appliance 5.x supports Oracle as an external database. It does not support IBM DB2 as an external database. vCenter Update Manager 5.x supports Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases. In this case an additional database server is required, so this answer is correct.

The key word is ‘additional DB’…that means current configuration is working find but if we want to use additional DB which DB server is required..if we already have oracle and SQL enterprise DB server they are smart enough to handle situation of larger infra…so option A & C not possible. Now options we have B & D…if we have option D that means our current configuration wouldn’t be possible because DB2 does not work with virtual appliance as question says additional DB so D is also not possible.
Now we have option B in which VUM is by default bundled with express DB only …that means we must use additional DB if we want additional DB.

And one more point here, option A & D asks for virtual appliance and we know DB2 can only be used for virtual server on windows. In other words if we use DB2 our current configuration wouldn’t be possible then how can we require additional DB..

Answer is B
