If I can use a mobile device, it’s not an Amazon device, it’s my private device.

Cannot find any specific info either, but it should be because you cannot just bring whatever MFA device you choose and start using it – it needs to be tied up to and supported by the AWS services. Therefore you cannot use a ‘private’ device. The ownership of the physical device is irrelevant (such as phone or actual MFA dongle/token or whatever else device.)
