The question states: “Fabricam.com must be used for the email domain and Office 365 user principal name”, does not say “You plan to use the default domain Fabricam.onmicrosoft.com”. in that case the first answer should be $domain=fabricam.com, can you confirm?

I think it should be:
$domain = Fabricam.com

Otherwise, Get-MsolDomainVerificationDns cmdlet makes no sense. We don’t have to verify ownership of a *.onmicrosoft.com domains.
