You are correct it is 802.11b that is backward compatible as 802.11n comes after 802.11g.

You are both right to in knowing 802.11b is backward compatible to 802.11g. But 802.11g is not backward compatible to 802.11b. 802.11g is backward compatible to 802.11n as is all that came before. Think of the answer in a timeline. Wireless began with 802.11a (1999), 802.11b(1999), 802.11g(2003) & then 802.11n(2009).
